As we enter SS20, it’s time to retire the heavy, warm fragrances of winter and turn to something that puts a hop in our step. At allbeauty, we stock thousands of decadent perfumes, and we know that narrowing down your options to a shortlist can be a tricky task! So, to help put you one step closer to finding your perfect signature scent, we’ve created this Spring Fragrance notes guide.

Choosing a Perfume Group

Entire collections of books have been written about the different olfactory groups, and many authorities have their own classification of subgroups, but we’ll endeavour to keep this as simple as possible! In general, there are four main perfume groups; floral, fresh, woody and oriental. For a Spring scent, we recommend opting for either floral or fresh and looking for additional woody base notes if you want a more masculine scent. From here, we can look at subgroups to further narrow down the genre of fragrance. This will help to determine the notes you’re looking for in your perfume.

Refining Your Selection

Each scent family can be split down into more specific categories, some of which are heavier and some lighter. Lighter fragrances are best for Spring; so take a look at the description of each to see which appeals to you the most.

Floral

Nothing quite says “spring” like the smell of freshly cut flowers. Floral perfumes are the core group when it comes to fragrances for this time of year.Common notes: rose, jasmine, peony, hyacinth

Our Favourite: In Love Again by YSL

Another combination of fruit and floral, In Love Again has mandarin and blackcurrant top notes, peony and rose mid notes and a base of musk and blackberry. Good enough to eat!

Fruity

Adding a sweet twist to traditional floral fragrances, fruity florals are a great choice for anyone looking for a refreshing, light perfume.Common notes: apple, pear, peach, melon

Our Favourite: J'Adore Injoy by Dior

A fruity floral, Dior J'Adore Injoy has a top note of gourmet salt 'Fleur de Sel', mid notes of sambac jasmine, neroli, tuberose and ylang-ylang, and a base of ripe peaches. A delectable scent that will see you through the warm months.

Ideal for Spring, the citrus subgroup is zesty and tangy, ranging from sweeter notes of mandarin to earthier bergamot.Common notes: lemon, orange, grapefruit, bergamot, mandarin

Our Favourite: CK One by Calvin Klein

The epitome of a unisex Spring fragrance, CK One combines green and citrus notes to create an award-winning perfume. Top notes include pineapple, papaya and bergamot, middle notes include jasmine, freesia and violet, while at its base are oakmoss, green tea and sandalwood.
