allbeauty bake off – Guernsey Gâche

Competition Time!

Bake off! Did you know that allbeauty’s headquarters are based on the island of Guernsey? That’s right, you can find us nestled in the English Channel in between the UK and France. With high temperatures, proximity to beaches with some of the largest tidal ranges in the world, a rich heritage, gorgeous cows and a cosy community, there’s a lot of fascinating facts to discover about Guernsey.

The current COVID-19 situation means that the allbeauty Guernsey team are all currently in isolation from our usual habitat (the office), working from home and finding new ways to adapt to life indoors and away from each other. Today, inspired by the spirit of coming together over the good British tradition of enjoying cake and a cup of tea, we want to share one of our favourite local recipes that you can also try at home. Step in our allbeauty bake-off challenge, inspired by our island home!

Guernsey Gâche (pronounced Gosh, as in… Oh my gosh, we’re about to show you how to make a really amazing loaf of bread that doesn’t include bananas) is a dish that has been made in Guernsey for centuries. We mentioned earlier before that Guernsey is very close to France – this is important for explaining the naming of this regional treat, as Gâche in Guernsey-French, the original Guernsey language, actually means Cake!

Gâche is a unique type of sweet bread made with dried fruits – raisins, sultanas, cherries and mixed peel, as well as Guernsey butter. We think it’s perfect for any time of day – toasted for breakfast, with that 4pm cup of tea (we love ours from a beach kiosk!) or even as a cheeky midnight snack.

1lb plain flour

½ lb Guernsey (or Good Quality) butter

12oz sultanas, currants or combination

2oz mixed or candied orange peel

1oz yeast

1tsp sugar

1tsp salt

½ pint warm water

1) Sieve your flour and salt together in a bowl. Leave to the side in a warm place.

2) In a separate bowl, cream the yeast with the sugar, being sure to add a little water. Leave the bowl in a warm place for a few minutes.

3) Take your bowl with the flour. Make a well in the centre and begin rubbing your butter in.

4) Add in the yeast mixture and gradually mix in the rest of the water to make a soft dough.

5) Fold in the fruit mix of sultanas, currants and peel.

6) Cover and leave to prove in a warm place for one and a half to two hours.

7) Turn the mix into a 1lb loaf tin.

8) Bake for thirty minutes at 220°C, then lower to 200°C, for a further thirty minutes.

Slice your loaf! We like it best when it’s been toasted and buttered.  Or even try with Cheese!

We would love to see your bakes – whether you attempt a Guernsey Gâche, a regional speciality from your hometown or even your Nan’s famous Victoria Sponge. Share your bakes with us on our Facebook or tag us on Instagram @allbeautyhq – we will be giving away a prize for our favourite!
