The five beauty rules French girls SWEAR by for that coveted Parisian-chic look...

While every country has it's own recognisable je ne sais quoi, there's something very particular about the French when it comes to beauty... We reveal the five 'rules' they follow for that unmistakable French aura:

1 Less is more...

Use makeup sparingly to emulate Parisian chic. For French girls, it's about enhancing what's there, not changing your appearance altogether - you won't see any contouring or baking! "In France, we never push it," says Paris-based Dior makeup artist Violette. "We don't like to change ourselves. So when putting on makeup, we just want to look fresher, but that's it. And we like to look the same when we take it all off. You brush your brows, you curl your lashes, you put on a little bit of mascara, a little bit of blush, maybe a little bit of concealer.”

2 You don't need to spend a fortune on fancy skincare...

It's pretty much a non-negotiable that when you don't wear a lot of makeup, you skin has to look flawless, which explains why French women are so meticulous about their skincare routines. Bur meticulous doesn't mean slathering on product after product - nor does it mean spending big bucks. In fact, France is infamous for the cult skincare products sold in every local pharmacy! 3 ALWAYS wear perfume!

If you've ever stepped out without perfume on and felt naked, you're not alone. It's an unspoken law that french girls always smell amazing, and with a host of chic designer fragrances to choose from we can see why... Our favourite? Chanel OF COURSE! And who doesn't love Chanel No.5 ? the ULTIMATE cult classic fragrance, Marilyn Monroe famously declared it was the only thing she wore to bed... Ooh la la! Created in 1986, this feminine scent contains top notes of peach and bergamot and heart notes of rose and jasmine on a bed of sandalwood.

4 Prep don't primp

When it comes to hair, the simple ballerina bun is probably as fussy as the French make it. And even then you'll only find it on the lesser-freewheeling of girls. Think undone, natural locks that bear as close a resemblance to bed-hair as possible. The trick? Step away from the hairdryer and tongs, and opt for air-dried locks instead. Straight hair is replaced by scrunching damp hair and spritzing with salt spray, and ditch perfect curls for undone braids and waves. We love the Sachajuan Ocean Mist made with Ocean Silk Technology to nourish, protect and add shine and volume to hair.
