Green Tea (Camellia sinensis) has become increasingly popular recently and is considered by some as a 'superfood' due to its high antioxidant activity. It is also believed to gently increase our metabolic rate (our body's ability to convert food into energy) and for this reason has soared in popularity with those watching their waistlines. However, as with most slimming 'aids' the efficacy of green tea is controversial. But since it is also a powerful antioxidant and free radical scavenger, there seems little concern in recommending it to suitable patients. The antioxidant effects are as a result of compounds known as catechins (polyphenols) found in high quality green tea leaf extracts.
