Pycnogenol® is an extract from the bark of the Maritime Pine and is rich in proanthocyanidins, a sub-group of the flavonoid family of plant compounds. Our prehistoric diet would have provided significant quantities of these PCOs as they are present in dark skinned fruit, berries and seeds. Extensive research has identified that PCOs are extremely active in the body, and the manufacturers of Pycnogenol® have classified the activity into four basic properties - it's a powerful antioxidant, acts as a natural anti-inflammatory, selectively binds to collagen and elastin, and finally, it aids in the production of endothelial nitric oxide which helps to dilate blood vessels.

Our interest in Pycnogenol® principally concerns its ability to protect and rebuild our body's collagen, as this gives practitioners a tool to tackle conditions linked to poor quality collagen, the structural protein that gives our skin it's elasticity and blood vessels their strength.
