How does it work?

The Science…

Your hair is made up of three types of bonds:

Disulfide bonds: The strongest of the three. They keep hair in the structure it was formed (either curly or straight) and cannot be broken by water or heat, only by chemical processes like perming, relaxing and colour-treating.

Salt bonds: These are plentiful in the cortex and are broken by pH changes in the hair. Readjusting the hair’s pH will stabilise these bonds.

Hydrogen bonds: The most flexible and easily broken by water or heat. Hydrogen bonds allow our hair to change shape temporarily – for example how hair is set in rollers while wet and held in position until it dries. As strands dry, hydrogen re-bonding occurs, but in the new shape. Hair will keep this shape until it becomes wet again, either when washed or as a result of humidity.

What makes Bond Builder Restructuring Treatment different?

Conditioning agents smooth the cuticle, and, by doing so, can limit how well active ingredients can penetrate the hair. Unlike other bond treatments that are packed with many conditioning agents, the lightweight Bond Builder Restructuring Treatment formula contains just one. This enables the advanced active technology to penetrate the cuticle with maximum efficacy.

The science behind this relates to pH levels. Hair’s natural pH is between 4.5 and 5.5, while water has a neutral pH of 7. Conditioner typically has a lower pH of 4.0-5.0 which flattens the cuticle, making it harder for actives to penetrate. A pH greater than 6 will raise the cuticle, allowing for easier absorption — which is why pre-shampoo treatments should be applied to wet, rather than dry hair.With a pH of 6.5-7, the actives inside Bond Builder Restructuring Treatment can effectively get to work, rather than simply laying atop the surface. Once the formula is cleansed away, and conditioner is applied, the cuticle is flattened, sealing the actives into your hair shaft.
