In the line-up of great ingredients for skincare, beeswax has rightly earned its place in the hall of fame. Few ingredients can so thoroughly smoothe rough patches, heal skin and protect from the elements like beeswax can. From your head to your heels, beeswax can help to improve the skin’s condition and offer some much-needed nourishment. We’ve all heard of beeswax being used in lip balm, but did you realise it has a much broader range of uses? In fact, beeswax can help relieve dry skin and eczema, and even fight acne!

What Is Beeswax?

Beeswax is produced within a beehive by worker bees and is used to create the cells where honey is stored. It can be harvested and used in a range of industries, with uses including candles, furniture polish, crafts, foods, and of course, skincare. While, on the surface, it may simply seem like any other waxy substance, beeswax is buzzing (excuse the pun) with beneficial compounds that can help to heal the skin and lock in moisture.

How Does It Work?

The main property of beeswax is that it softens the skin while locking in moisture to reduce dryness. It does this by creating a natural barrier on the skin’s surface to protect it from moisture loss. Beeswax is also a humectant, attracting water from the air and drawing it into the skin. Not only that, but it’s also non-comedogenic, meaning that it does all of this without clogging pores, part of what makes it an ideal skincare ingredient.Beeswax is a natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent, so is often used to help the healing of wounds. Its antibacterial properties reduce the growth of bacteria and inhibit infection while still allowing the skin to breathe. For this reason, it can be effective when used on skin affected by eczema or psoriasis.Lastly, beeswax has also been found to contain high concentrations of vitamin A, a compound that supports the regeneration and reconstruction of skin cells.

Who Can Benefit From Using Beeswax?

Beeswax is a natural ingredient that is widely used to nourish and protect skin of all types. Skin prone to acne will benefit from the antiseptic and healing qualities of beeswax combined with the natural presence of vitamin A. The non-comedogenic barrier will soothe and moisturise, preventing clogged pores and future flare-ups.Dry and eczema-prone skin will benefit from the moisturising and anti-inflammatory qualities of beeswax and will find that the occurrence of rough, itchy patches is reduced. The use of beeswax is particularly helpful for dry skin or when skin would be otherwise exposed to the harsh elements.Whatever your skin type, a good quality beeswax lip balm should also be a year-round staple!
