5 Ways To Show Your Mum You Love Her
27 February 2020
Of all the annual holidays, Mother’s Day is arguably one of the most important. Raising kids is a thankless job, and our mums did a pretty good job (if we do say so ourselves). So, showing her how much she means to you isn’t a task to take lightly.
This year, instead of panic-buying expensive socks, treat your mum to a thoughtful gift when she’s least expecting it. In fact, why not give one of the below gifts for Mother’s Day and the others at random times throughout the year?
Go on, she deserves it.
Add atmosphere to her living room
Whether your mum has retired or isn’t quite at that stage yet, she’s likely to spend more time at home than she once did. By nature, as we age we tend to enjoy our creature comforts more and appreciate the little things in life, like the comfort of a favourite armchair or the routine of a nightly tv line-up.
Why not add to the ambience by gifting her a scented candle? Choose the right fragrance and you’ll add a whole new element to the room, enveloping her home in a warm scent that adds to the atmosphere. For safe options, Orla Kiely does a fantastic Earl Grey candle with notes of black tea and bergamot – perfect for tea lovers, and you can’t go wrong with The Ritual Of Sakura, which combines the delicate scent of rice milk with cherry blossom.
Give her the gift of a good night’s sleep
How many sleepless nights have we given our mums over the years? Well, why not make up for it by helping her drift off with ease this Mother’s Day? Thisworks is an award-winning company that produces a range of sleep-inducing oils, diffusers, balms and pillow sprays.
The Deep Sleep Pillow Spray, in particular, has a fan following, with 97% of people surveyed reporting they felt more awake the day after using it. With lavender, chamomile and vetiver, the fragrance blend relaxes body and mind, improving sleep quality and reducing restlessness. Or, if you know she’s having a particularly difficult time drifting off, try the Sleep Plus Pillow Spray which has an increased concentration.
Let her know you’re thinking of her
It’s the little things that count, and nothing is quite as impactful as being surprised with a gift when you’re least expecting it. We love the idea of slipping a gift-wrapped goody into mum’s handbag for her to find later. It doesn’t have to be an expensive or ground-breaking gift, something as simple as a hand cream can be just as appreciated.
If you’re looking for a product that looks as luxurious as it feels, you can’t go wrong with Neom Organics Scent to Make You Happy. It contains mood-boosting essential oils, designed to lift spirits as well as nourishing the skin. Or, if her hands are particularly dry from gardening and other hard-wearing activities, try something more powerful like this Shea Butter Intense Hand Balm by L’Occitane.
A touch of the spa, at home
When was the last time your mum enjoyed a day at the spa? Treating her to a spa day would be the perfect gift for Mother’s Day, but if you can’t, or if she’s not one to indulge in the rest and relaxation that spa treatments offer, there are plenty of other ways to bring the experience to her.
A good-quality body scrub is a fantastic way to indulge in some pampering. Aromatic, invigorating, exfoliating and hydrating, scrubs offer an at-home treatment with minimal effort. Opt for a brand that can be found in the top spas, such as this Atlantic Kelp and Magnesium Scrub from REN Skincare, or the Frangipani Monoi Salt Glow from Elemis.
Give her bathroom an upgrade
No, I’m not talking about a full bathroom renovation, though that would seriously earn some brownie points; I’m talking soap. I don’t know about your mum, but ours buy themselves the same old hand soap from the bottom shelf in the supermarket, year in, year out. It’s one of the many things she doesn’t like to spend money on. So, this year, I’ll be replacing her depressing bar of hand soap with something a little more luxurious.
There is such a wide range of decadent hand washes that the hardest part is narrowing it down to a shortlist, but on ours is the Molton Brown White Mulberry Hand Wash and the L’Occitane Shea Butter Verbena Liquid Soap. L’Occitane gets bonus points for having an eco-refill option, but that Molton Brown bottle is all class.
Whatever you do to show your mum how much you care this Mother’s Day, remember to appreciate her throughout the year. After all, without her, you wouldn’t be who you are today.
