Our Redken Clean Maniac review trials the exciting new range to purify hair.

Our Beauty Editor Claire tried new Redken Clean Maniac Micellar Clean-Touch Shampoo and Conditioner for 2 weeks - here's what she thought.

Shampoo, according to the dictionary, is a product that cleans the hair without leaving a soap film. But it's fair to say, the actual cleaning part has almost been forgotten among colour treatments, deep conditioner, split end repair masks etc. etc. And with so much product in our hair, not to mention dirt, pollution, odours etc., there comes a time when you just need to stop and do a factory reset!

Redken Clean Maniac Micellar
Saving the day is new Redken Clean Maniac - silicone and sulphate free, it uses magnet-like micellar technology (yep, the same micellar you use to remove your makeup) to neutralise bad smells, remove pollution, impurities, product residue, and excess sebum. For all hair types (and especially normal to greasy hair), it's colour-safe and can be used daily. You can use it alone, as a pre-wash treatment or alternate it with your current hair care range. And to be honest, the thought of using a product to give my hair a truly deep clean, was very appealing.

Redken Clean Maniac - What I Did

Redken Clean Maniac Micellar Review After
My hair was soft, silky and smooth...

Starting with the shampoo, I was really surprised by the scent - or rather lack of! I was expecting something 'clean' but there's very little noticeable fragrance (perhaps a slight apple scent?) So far so good. My hair is very long and completely unruly, so I began by wetting my hair and applying a tablespoon of product (but if you have short to mid-length hair then apply half that amount). There is a lather but it's low-level, so don't expect foam everywhere, but do expect a clean and totally non-soapy feel. After rinsing, my hair felt, um clean. I know, hardly a shock result (!) but that's exactly how it felt - clean, washed, like hair. It was easy to rinse and overall a pretty quick process.

On to the conditioner... I wasn't sure what to expect from this as my normal conditioners soften and detangle. What does a cleansing conditioner do? Again I applied a tablespoon, starting at the ends and moving up to the scalp. The conditioner is creamy when it comes out of the bottle but on application does something magical - it turns into an oil. Again, no overwhelming fragrance, but a soft clean feel. A quick rinse and all done. Now for the results...

Redken Clean Maniac - The Results

Redken Clean Maniac Micellar Review After
After washing with Redken Clean Maniac Micellar Shampoo & Conditioner - look at that volume and shine!

Straight after washing, my hair definitely felt different. It was soft but with a more honest, natural feel than usual. I'm used to my hair feeling super soft after a wash, but this was an almost 'bare' feel. There was virtually no scent to my hair either (I practically had to push it up my nose to detect anything!) The only downside was my hair needing a b

it more help with the comb to detangle it, but having thick and unruly hair, and not using a detangling shampoo, this wasn't a surprise. To get a fair result, I left it to dry naturally with no product. The result? To my surprise, very soft, manageable hair. No frizz, no flat bits - my hair looked great!

Redken Clean Maniac - My Verdict

Although you can use Clean Maniac in between your usual Redken range, I've continued with it for the past 2 weeks. Partly to give my hair a super-deep clean and partly because my hair just feels so soft and strokeable! I really struggle to find shampoo and conditioner that gives it that feel, so to get it from a 'cleansing' shampoo seems odd but amazing. Overall an excellent experience - I'm giving Redken Clean Maniac a 9/10. I'll switch back to my usual product at some point, but for now I'm just enjoying the sensation of really clean, really natural, soft hair.
