Wine comes from vineyards, but do you know what else does? Luxurious French skincare.

The story behind the award-winning skincare brand Caudalie is well known, as are its founders Mathilde and Bertrand Thomas. According to Mathilde, “the vine is an inexhaustible treasure of benefits and riches,” and Caudalie is continually experimenting and innovating to bring these treasures to you. Allbeauty unpacks the magic behind some of Caudalie’s exclusive ingredients, brought to you directly from the French vineyards of Bordeaux, Champagne and Burgundy.

Grape Seed Polyphenols

As the name suggests, grape seed polyphenols are extracted from grape seeds that are normally discarded during the white wine making process.

What they do: Polyphenols are some of the most powerful natural antioxidants in skincare. They combat free radicals in the body that occur from the sun, pollution, and even stress. According to Caudalie, four out of every five wrinkles are caused by oxidation due to these free radicals. Polyphenols block up to 80% of these free radicals and help your skin preserve its natural levels of hyaluronic acid, keeping it looking firmer and more youthful. Find grapeseed polyphenols in: A Caudalie toner like the Vinopure Clear Skin Purifying Toner that unclogs and tightens pores, leaving your skin feeling clear and fresh.

Resveratrol

Grapevines can grow for over a hundred years, withstanding harsh weather like the wind, cold, and rain. The secret to their longevity is resveratrol found in their stalks. It’s not an easy ingredient to extract though – one ton of vine stalks yield just five kilograms of pure resveratrol.

What it does: Vines use resveratrol to regenerate. Caudalie’s patented cocktail of ingredients combines resveratrol with hyaluronic acid. This combination can triple the skin’s natural production of hyaluronic acid. Caudalie skincare is a pioneer of using resveratrol in its products so that your skin is left looking firmer and more youthful. Resveratrol also enhances the production of elastin, to give your skin a more sculpted look.

Find it in: A Caudalie eye cream like Premier Cru The Eye Cream which targets fine lines, wrinkles, crow’s feet, dark circles and puffiness.

Viniferine

Mathilde Thomas discovered an ancient tradition, where the men and women who worked the vineyards in Bordeaux would apply sap from the grapevines on their hands and faces. Applying this sap would soothe their tired skin after a long day out in the sun. Extensive research on grapevine sap found that the active ingredient was viniferine.

What it does: Powerhouse viniferine lightens and brightens stressed skin and eliminates blemishes, to even out your skin tone. In fact, Caudalie’s research found that viniferine is an incredible 62 times more effective than vitamin C as a skin brightener. Suitable for even the most sensitive skin, viniferine reduces the appearance of dark spots and blemishes, no matter their cause – whether its hormonal, acne-related or due to sun damage. It does this by controlling tyrosinase which is an enzyme responsible for the overproduction of melanin. As a result, your skin looks smoother, healthy, and more radiant.

Grape Water

This Caudalie ingredient is exactly what it sounds like – organic grape water extracted from grapes before the wine making process begins.

What it does: Grape water is packed full of polyphenols and polysaccharides, which are hydrating sugars. Polysaccharides also soothe skin by keeping it supple and moisturised. As well as being a great hydrator, research has shown that grape water also helps reduce skin sensitivity, making it ideal for those with delicate skin.

Find it in: Caudalie Vinosource-Hydra Moisturizing Mask that intensely soothes and nourishes dry and sensitive skin.

Vitamin C

Okay, so this ingredient isn’t exclusive to Caudalie but you have to love how they use it. Vitamin C is one of the beauty industry’s top skincare ingredients, and grapes are an excellent source of Vitamin C.

What it does: As well as being a great antioxidant, Vitamin C stimulates collagen production and has anti- inflammatory properties too. Vitamin C is also a skin brightener making it ideal for skin that’s prone to developing acne or spots. Learn more about all the benefits Vitamin C brings to your skin here.

Find it in: Caudalie combines Vitamin C and grape seed oil in the Caudalie Vinergetic C+ Overnight Detox Oil that gently repairs the skin overnight by detoxifying your complexion and reviving stressed skin.
